Kenyans win Macau Int’l Marathon

Macau, China, 5 Dec – Kenyans won the men’s and women’s 2011 Galaxy Entertainment International Marathon Sunday.

Chemlany Stephen Kwelio, aged 29, won the men’s marathon, clocking up 2:12.49 hours. He finished second in last year’s local event.

Maisei Julius Kiplimo of Kenya finished the men’s marathon in second place, clocking up 2:12.53 hours, while Ethiopia ’s Gemeda Haile Haja came in third, at 2:12.59 hours.

His compatriot Jepkemboi Chesire Rose, aged 27, won the women’s marathon, clocking up 2:31.28 hours.

In the women’s race, Reta Tsega Gelaw of Ethiopia finished second in 2:31.48 hours and  Kenya ’s Nyansikera Winfridah came in third, at 2:32.27 hours.

Each won the first prize of US$20,000, local record prize of US$15,000 and a bonus of US$5,000, according to a statement from the event’s organising committee.

Among Macau ’s marathon runners, Kuok Chi Wai came out best in the men’s race, while Hoi Long topped the women’s race.

According to The Macau Post Daily the event, comprising a marathon, half marathon and mini-marathon, drew a record number of 6,000 runners.

The 30th Macau International Marathon was co-organised by the Macau Sport Development Board (IDM) and Macau Athletics Association (AAM) in conjunction with the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) and Macau Olympic and Sports Committee. As in previous years, the event was title-sponsored by the Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) casino company.(MacauNews/Sports)
