The exhibition In the mind of Bruno Moinard officially opened yesterday to the public at GalaxyArt as part of this year’s Macao International Art Biennale. Offering an exclusive glimpse into acclaimed French interior designer Bruno Moinard’s multidisciplinary art practice, the show features over 300 never-before-seen sketches, paintings and design manuscripts, as well as ongoing designs for Galaxy Macau’s upcoming luxury hotel, Capella.

The exhibition is split into 11 sections, and weaves a colourful narrative of Moinard’s artistic practice. Visitors first embark into the “Creative Corridor,” where the key artwork Pour la Chine (“For China”), composed of dark blues and inky hues, is displayed at the far end. Abstract oil and gouache paintings – Moinard’s first and most personal artform – are complemented with a documentary, which explores Moinard’s lifelong relationship with art and its different forms. Visitors can also watch a bird’s-eye view projection of Moinard painting on large canvases laid flat on his studio, where the physical act of painting becomes a performance in itself.

GalaxyArt unveils Bruno Moinard’s colourful, multidisciplinary approach to art
The intimacy of Moinard’s creative studio is recreated in the exhibition space

As visitors head deeper into the gallery, they can see a recreation of Moinard’s creative studio – his paintings are displayed unframed in an intimate manner on wooden easels, propped against a plain wall or simply laid on the floor. Further on, there are photographs of Moinard and his artwork by photographer Jacques Pépion, where visitors zoom out of Moinard’s art and into his other inspirations in life such as classic automobiles from the 50s and 60s and natural landscapes.

There is a space dedicated to the prolific works of Moinard Bétaille, the interior design agency led by Moinard and his creative counterpart Claire Bétaille, another dedicated to Moinard’s distinctive coloured felt-pen travel sketches, with the exhibition finally culminating to an open space where the colourful and elegant sketches Moinard created for the Capella Hotel are displayed.

Moinard himself was there to inaugurate the event and offer insight into the exhibition. He expresses that it is a rare occasion for an artist to share work that is ongoing, which is the case with the Capella Hotel. He also shares that Macao has been a subject in his art recently as he is someone who enjoys documenting the places he travels to.

This free exhibition will be on until 31 December and open from 10 am to 10 pm daily at GalaxyArt in the Galaxy Macau.
