A prestigious showcase of international contemporary dance, Voices in Contemporary Dance – Global Masters’ Showcase, will make its Southern China debut at the Guangzhou Opera House on 24 and 25 October at 7:30 pm, according to Guangdong News.

Produced by the pioneering Rice Theatre, the shows bring together three acclaimed international works, performed by a cast of 24 dancers. Billed as a new era for Chinese contemporary dance, this is the first time internationally acclaimed choreographers will collaborate with young Chinese dancers to create new interpretations of these works.

The meticulously curated programme spans nearly three decades of contemporary dance. It opens with I wonder where the dreams I don’t remember go (2020) by French artists Yoann and Marie Bourgeois. Known for blending acrobatics with dance, the piece uses custom stage machinery to create a dreamlike space that questions reality.

The second piece, Cacti (2010), is a humorous satire by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman. Featuring sixteen dancers interacting with cacti on giant Scrabble tiles, the work wittily explores the nature of art criticism.

The finale is Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin’s Minus 16 (1999). Naharin is the founder of the Gaga movement, a movement language that encourages sensory awareness and exploration rather than following a prescribed set of steps. The piece captures the complex emotions of entering into a new millennium, and famously blurs the line between performers and the audience.

Tickets for the Guangzhou showcase are available on Damai here and range from 180 to 880 yuan. This production will also take the stage at Shanghai Grand Theatre next Wednesday and Thursday on 29 and 30 October.
