A local man was arrested for beating his daughter because she refused to study abroad, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Leng Kam Lon said at a regular press conference on Friday.

The 52-year-old jobless suspect is surnamed Chong. His daughter, the victim, is in her twenties.

According to Leng, the victim reported to the police on 2 January that she had been attacked by her father on New Year’s Day. She told the police that her father would like her to go abroad to further her education, but she had refused many times. Both argued frequently about the matter, and their relationship worsened.

On New Year’s Day, Chong and his wife visited their daughter who lives in a rented flat in the city centre. They discussed the matter again, resulting in a quarrel. Chong got angry, slapped his daughter, and allegedly even attacked her with a wooden stool, hurting her back.

Leng said the suspect’s wife stopped the attack, after which the couple left the flat. The victim decided to report the case to the police the following day. Questioned by the police early last week, Chong admitted to the attack, Leng said.

Chong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of causing bodily harm, according to Leng.
