A Judiciary Police (PJ) officer killed himself by setting light to a pile of charcoal inside his car in a parking space near Sai Van Lake.

PJ spokesman Ho Chan Nam said police received a call from the victim’s family stating that they had lost contact with him. Officers later located the victim’s car, which was parked near Sai Van Lake, and found the victim and burnt charcoal inside.

The victim, a 47-year-old male surnamed Cheang, was confirmed dead at the scene, The Macau Post Daily reported.

Based on a preliminary investigation, officers believe Cheang ended his own life for personal reasons as a suicide note was found in the car and there was no evidence of foul play.

The exact cause of death will be determined by forensic examination. The case has been referred to the PJ Investigation Section for follow-up.

People at risk of suicide, or those suspecting that a person is at risk of suicide, may phone the Social Affairs Bureau’s (IAS) 24-hour counselling hotline (2826 1126) or Caritas Macau’s Life Hope hotline (2852 5222).
