Various sectors of the local community hosted a ceremony on Tuesday at the Macau Cultural Centre in Nape to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr Sun Yat-sen.

Dr Sun, also known as Sun Zhongshan or Sun Wen, is widely seen as the founder of modern China. He was born in Guangdong’s then Hsiang-shan county near Macau on November 12, 1866. The county was renamed Zhongshan in honour of Dr Sun after his death in 1925.

Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On gave a speech at the event, saying that that Dr Sun had been to Macau many times when he was young.

Pointing out that Dr Sun was Macau’s first Chinese Western medical practitioner in 1892, Chui said Dr Sun was treating the sick while planning the nation’s democratic revolution during his stay in the city.

Chui’s predecessor Edmund Ho Hau Wah, now a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), also gave a speech at the ceremony.

Ho said Dr Sun had striven to unify China his whole life. He also said Macau’s successful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” was worthy of great pride, adding that the implementation was a valuable experience to unify and bring peace to the nation.

Ho also said Macau residents should continue to comply with the Macau Basic Law, be patriotic and push forward with the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
