Coco Zhao, one of China’s leading contemporary jazz musicians, will play at Macao Cultural Centre (CCM) on Saturday, 25 February. The artist is famed for his creative merging of jazz and traditional Chinese music.
A vocalist, songwriter and poet, Zhao is a top name in China’s jazz scene, and is the first Chinese artist to be invited to the Montreal Jazz Festival – the largest of its kind. He has also performed at Jazz à Juan in France, the Singapore Jazz Festival and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
Backed by a seven-piece band of renowned Shanghai jazz musicians, Zhao promises a lineup of jazz classics in addition to original and Shanghai-inspired jazz pieces.

According to the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), the concert “aims to recreate the atmospheres of the 1920s Shanghainese cabarets and American speakeasies of the prohibition days.”
The artist will also be leading a workshop on ‘Jazzy voices’ on 23 February at the Macao Cultural Centre.
