The 20th Macau City Fringe Festival will be held next January with the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) already calling for proposals for events and the performance venues, and the deadline for applications is 31 July by 5 pm, the bureau said in a statement on Wednesday.

The festival aims to spread a “creative and adventurous spirit” and encourage artists to come up with performances that show the city’s characteristics and cultural connotation from multiple perspectives, the statement noted.

According to the statement, the Macau City Fringe Festival strives to “break the barriers” of traditional performance venues, aiming to bring a variety of artistic and creative works to the city. The festival has adopted the concept of “all round the city, our stages, our patrons, our artists”.

Macao art practitioners and non-profit art and cultural associations registered with the Identification Services Bureau (DSI) are welcome to submit their proposals, the statement said.

According to the statement, all forms of performing arts and artistic activities will be accepted, including from local, overseas or cross-regional collaborations, with priority to be given to local productions, site-specific productions and productions related to the local culture and community.

In addition, the festival will invite industry professionals, programme curators and producers from other regions to enjoy the performances, and the festival aims to serve as an exchange platform for local artists and non-local producers, in order to create more opportunities for both local and non-local art practitioners to exchange ideas and showcase their creations, the statement said.

The festival-related regulations, application forms to propose events, and the Fringe venue registration form can be downloaded from the IC official website (www.icm.gov.mo).

Applicants can submit the completed application forms and relevant documents in person at the Cultural Affairs Bureau in Praça do Tap Seac during office hours, or by post or email to [email protected], indicating the following on the envelope or in the subject line: “Attn: Division of Performing Arts, Cultural Affairs Bureau, 20th Macao City Fringe Festival – Call for Proposals of Programmes”.

Applicants who propose performance venues should submit the completed Fringe venue registration form by email to [email protected]. For enquiries, call 8399 6660 during office hours.
