The Covid-19 contagion in Macao will peak in 7-14 days, Health Bureau (SS) Director Alvis Lo said today.

Lo told local radio station Ou Mun Tin Toi that his forecast is based on daily symptomatic cases that have now reached between 80 to 100. He added that the number of people testing positive for Covid-19 will continue to increase in the next few days.

He also confirmed that the Covid-19 variants currently spreading throughout the city are the Omicron BF.7 commonly found in Beijing and the BA.5.2 found in Guangdong province.

Lo stressed that his bureau is handling the situation well, pointing out only 6 per cent of Macao’s 6,600 available medical facilities’ beds are currently occupied. He added that around 10 per cent of the city’s frontline workers have tested positive for Covid-19, admitting that the actual number could be much more.

The SS director advised parents with children aged three and below not to take their little ones to hospital emergency units, even if they have a fever. Instead, they should bring their children to the community clinics set up by the government.

The number of positive cases in Macao has been increasing rapidly over the past few days with many institutions and companies suspending or reducing their activities to cope with the city’s emergency situation.
