Macao and Shanghai yesterday signed a series of cooperation agreements across various sectors, following a meeting in Macao between Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai and the mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng. The agreements aim to deepen practical cooperation between the two cities and contribute to national development.

The signed memoranda include a new round of general cooperation, an agreement on deepening financial cooperation, and a letter of intent to strengthen collaboration in the convention and exhibition sector. Further agreements were reached on academic exchange, science and technology innovation, educational exchanges and research.

During the meeting, held at Government Headquarters, Sam expressed gratitude for Shanghai’s collaboration and support for Macao’s development.

He noted the growing ties between the two places in fields such as finance, technology innovation, culture and tourism, conventions and exhibitions, and youth affairs and education.

Sam highlighted that Macao and Shanghai, as central cities in the Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta city cluster respectively, had similarities. He emphasised Macao’s role as a commercial and trade cooperation service platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, and Shanghai’s position as an international financial and technological innovation hub.

Both leaders acknowledged the greater development opportunities presented by strong central government support. Sam expressed a desire for Shanghai and Macao to capitalise on these opportunities, complement each other’s strengths, and achieve further practical cooperation to contribute to the nation’s development.
