A laranja (orange) hot weather warning is now in effect in Macao. This means that “extremely hot” weather is forecast, with temperatures in excess of 36°C expected in parts of the territory today.
According to readings made by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (known as the SMG after its Portuguese abbreviation) at 8:15 am, the mercury was already above 30°C at all the SAR’s measuring stations, from Dr Sun Yat Sen Municipal Park in the north to Vila de Coloane near Macao’s southern extremity.
The SMG is advising vulnerable populations – the elderly, children, persons with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and the obese – to “stay in an indoor venue with moderate temperature and good ventilation.”

The general population is being advised to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Outdoor work should be done in the morning or later part of the afternoon. Loose, thin and light coloured clothing should be worn.
Residents are also urged to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, to stay well hydrated and to take every precaution against heatstroke.
Macao is far from alone in facing uncomfortably hot conditions this summer. Globally, 2024’s was the hottest summer on record and 2025 is turning out to be no different, with scorching heat waves across the rest of China, and extreme temperatures in Europe and the Indian subcontinent.
