The University of Macau (UM) is now ranked 180th place in the World University Rankings 2025, rising from 193rd place the previous year.

Published annually by the UK-based Times Higher Education supplement, the prestigious list ranks 200 of the best universities in the world, and also groups more than 2,000 institutions from 115 locations into different categories.

The head of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, Kong Chi Meng, told local media that UM’s performance was an “encouraging” international recognition of the university’s efforts in teaching and research.

The university has also performed exceptionally well in other rankings such as the QS 2025 World University Rankings, where it is ranked 245th place, and the US News 2024 Best Global Universities Rankings, where it was positioned in 262nd place

The Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) also featured on the list, retaining its ranking in the cohort of institutions in 251st to 300th place – a position it occupied this year. MUST’s ranking has remained more or less consistent over the past five years, although it did reach the 201st to 150th place division in 2023.

The City University of Macau and the University of Saint Joseph were on the list but not ranked.

In terms of the overall list, the University of Oxford defended its position as the world’s top university for a ninth consecutive year, even though Times Higher Education pointed out that “the reputation of the wider UK sector is rapidly eroding.”

Massachusetts Institute of Technology earned second place, followed by Harvard University, Princeton University and the University of Cambridge.
