Lawmaker-cum-unionist Kwan Tsui Hang has asked the government to give the public an explanation as to why its bill on protecting consumer rights has not been submitted to the Legislative Assembly (AL) as scheduled.
The veteran lawmaker also says she worries that lawmakers may not be able to finish debating and reviewing the bill within the current 4-year term of the legislature which will end on August 15 next year.
Kwan raises the bill in a written interpellation submitted to the legislature on Monday. A copy of the interpellation was sent to the media.
Kwan says in the interpellation that the government held a public consultation process on the bill in 2014, and in February last year it published its official report on the public consultation process.
Kwan points out that the government also promised that the bill will be ready for the legislative process in the first quarter of this year.
Kwan, a vice chairwoman of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, also says that the government said recently that the bill was in its final drafting stages and that it would be ready for the legislative process later this year.
“The bill aims at ensuring that consumers will be given better protection, the government should explain why it cannot submit the bill to the legislature as scheduled,” Kwan says in the interpellation.
