The American rapper J. Cole says he regrets his “lame” and “goofy” response to a song by fellow American rapper Kendrick Lamar, the BBC reports.
Cole released the “diss track” – a song attacking another artist – titled “7 Minute Drill” on Friday. Its lyrics describe Lamar’s latest work as “tragic” and other albums as boring enough to put people to sleep.
The track came in the wake of a recent Lamar single titled “Like That,” in which Lamar appears to disagree with an earlier lyric of Cole’s. Cole had suggested that he, the Canadian rapper Drake and Lamar were the biggest three names in hip hop, while Lamar’s song argued that it was “just big me.”

However, Cole has since recanted. He told his audience at a US festival on Sunday that he’d “felt terrible” since releasing “7 Minute Drill” and that its lyrics “didn’t sit right with my spirit.”
Cole went on to praise Lamar’s back catalogue, apologise for any offence caused, and promise to remove (or update) “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services, the BBC says.
He also encouraged Lamar to take a retaliatory shot at him. “I got my chin out,” he said.
“Take your best shot, I’ll take that on the chin.”
