Macau’s population stood at 643,100 at the end of September, an increase of just 200 quarter-to-quarter, said the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) attributing the slowdown in population growth to a decrease in the number of imported workers living in Macau.
Females accounted for 50.8 percent of the population.
The number of imported workers stood at 180,751 at the end of the third quarter, an increase of just 228 over the previous quarter. Some imported workers live in Zhuhai from where they commute daily.
A total of 1,982 immigrants from the mainland were granted the right of abode in the third quarter, up by 316 quarter-to-quarter.
Based on the city’s land area of 30.3 square kilometres, its population density stood at 21,224 at the end of September, the highest of any country or autonomous region in the world.
