More than 100 paintings by French masters including Claude Monet, Théodore Géricault, and Gustave Courbet are on display at the University of Macau (UM) Museum of Art, along with photographs by the artists’ contemporaries.
Titled With the Sunshine, Across The Sea: From French Impressionism to Landscape Paintings of Macao, the exhibition also includes landscape works by 20th-century Macao-based artists – the likes of George Smirnoff, Luís Luciano Demée, and Kwok Se.
At the exhibition’s opening ceremony last week, curator Li Jun described the “magical chemical reaction” water and oil have when mixed as similar to the convergence of Eastern and Western cultures in Macao.

At the launch, UM rector, Yonghua Song outlined the university’s dedication to the arts. He noted that UM established its Department of Arts and Design in 2021, then the Museum of Art in 2023, and had recently launched both a Master of Fine Arts and Doctor of Fine Arts programmes.
He said that University of Macau’s Museum of Art was actively engaged in “enriching the artistic vision and aesthetic taste of the Macao audience.”
With The Sunshine, Across The Sea is a free exhibition running until 5 May.
