A survey conducted by the Macau New Chinese Youth Association (ANJCM) in the middle of last month shows that 43.94 percent of respondents are not satisfied with the city’s housing situation, followed by transport problems (32.56 percent) and inflation (20.2 percent).
The survey’s results were announced by the association Wednesday. The ANJCM asked 817 local residents aged 18 and over by phone about their level of satisfaction with Macau’s development since the 1999 change in administration.
The association also invited several community activists to comment on the survey’s findings and their conclusions. Wong Kuok Wai, vice secretary of the Macau General Association of Neighbourhood Unions (commonly known as Kai Fong), said that given the scarcity of land in Macau, he urged the government to listen to residents’ opinions concerning land use.
The findings also show that the public is generally satisfied with Macau’s development in the last 15 years, with 73.4 percent saying that Macau’s social and economic development has improved compared to the pre-handover period, while 66.6 percent said the central government has provided abundant support to the local government.
ANJCM President Lo Iek Long pointed out that 66.2 percent said that they are satisfied with the way the “One Country, Two Systems” principle is being implemented locally, while 63.5 percent said they are confident that the government can “maintain Macau’s prosperity and stability”.
Lo also said the average mark given by the respondents on their satisfaction with Macau’s development is 69.1 adding the top three aspects that respondents are most satisfied with are the annual wealth-sharing scheme, economic development and low unemployment.
The scale ranged from zero (completely dissatisfied) to 100 (totally satisfied).(macaunews/macaupost)
