Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng highlighted Macao’s digitalisation at the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, which took place in Beijing on 17 and 18 October. The event was part of the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China’s global infrastructure programme.
During his speech at a high-level forum on the digital economy yesterday afternoon, Ho explained how digitalisation had helped Macao implement the “One country, two systems” principle by which the territory is governed. He cited the Macao Science 1 satellites as evidence of enhanced cooperation between the SAR and mainland China in the aerospace field.
He also highlighted its role in facilitating Macao’s novel Micro Connect Macao Financial Assets Exchange (MCEX), which connects small and micro businesses in mainland China with global investors and leading industry partners via a fintech platform.

Ho told forum participants that Macao was an important node in the BRI. He said that the SAR was committed to promoting integrated development of China’s digital and real economies, particularly in regards to the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and the rest of the Greater Bay Area.
As Beijing’s signature foreign policy strategy, the BRI is focused on infrastructure projects across Asia, Africa, Latin America and parts of Eastern and Southern Europe.
In President Xi Jingping’s keynote speech yesterday morning, he described BRI’s past decade as “a journey of dedicated cooperation and fruitful outcomes.”
“Belt and Road cooperation was proposed by China, but its benefits and opportunities are for the world to share,” he noted.
