Macau’s total population – comprising residents and imported workers – rose 4.4 percent year-on-year to 607,500 at the end of 2013, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced Thursday.

In one year, the city’s population increased by 25,500.

Based on Macau’s land area of 29.9 square kilometres, its population density reached 20,318 at the end of last year, the highest of any country and territory in the world, The Macau Post Daily pointed out.

Females accounted for 51.4 percent of the total population. Some eight percent of the population was elderly (aged 65 and over), while young people (aged up to 14) accounted for 11.3 percent of the total.

Macau recorded 6,571 live births last year, a decrease of 744 year-on-year. The gender ratio of the newborn stood at 114.5, corresponding to 114.5 male babies per 100 female babies. A total of 1,920 people died in Macau last year, 79 more than in 2012. Cancer and circulatory and respiratory diseases were the main causes of death.

A total of 3,338 mainlanders settled in Macau last year, 722 less than a year earlier. The number of illegal immigrants repatriated to the mainland amounted to 1,335 last year, 184 more than in 2012.

The number of non-resident workers (imported labour) totalled 137,838 at the end of last year, an increase of 27,286 year-on-year. Imported workers accounted for 22.7 percent of the population at te end of last year.

Last year recorded 4,153 marriage registrations (+9.8 percent) and 1,172 divorce cases, 25 more than in 2012.

At the end of 1999, when the Macau Special Adminstrative Region (MSAR) was established, the city’s population stood at 429,600 and its land area at 23.8 sqkm.

Meanwhile, Macau’s officially estimated unemployment rate stood at 1.7 percent in the survey period between November last year and last month, according to a separate DSEC statement, down by 0.1 percentage points year-on-year.

Macau’s total labour force amounted to 379,000. Total employment reached 372,000, while 6,500 were jobless. (macaunews)
