Newly-appointed Taipei Economic and Cultural Office chief Lu Chang-shui said Monday he was determined to further deepen exchanges and co-operation between Taiwan and Macau.

He made the remark when delivering a speech at a Chinese New Year banquet organised by the office in Macau . Over a hundred locals including civic leaders and students who graduated from Taiwan universities attended.

In his speech, Lu said that ties between Macau and Taiwan had a good foundation.

“Personally I expect that the exchanges and co-operation [between Macau and Taiwan] will be further deepened,” Lu was quoted by The Macau Post Daily as saying, adding that even though he has only worked in the city for about a fortnight he already regards it as his second home.

According to Lu, currently there are about 4,000 local students studying in Taiwan universities, adding that so far over 40,000 locals have graduated from universities in Taiwan.

Talking to reporters, Lu said he had noticed that Macau has started to place special emphasis on the development of its creative and cultural industries.

“Taiwan has its advantages in the field … the exchanges [involving the creative and cultural industries] should be further deepened,” Lu said.

Lu took up the post upon departure of his predecessor Lo Muh-kuen on March 1.

The original name of the office was Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre, which was changed in July 2011. The quasi-official office operates under Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC).

Macau has opened in 2012 a representative office in Taipei.(macaunews)
