Two of Macao’s most prominent artists, Ung Vai Meng and Chan Hin Io, will be displaying their work at this year’s La Biennale di Venezia, which starts its seven-month run on 23 April.
The duo, who founded YiiMa Art Group, are contributing 11 artworks to the exhibition, entitled Allegory of Dreams, which is curated by João Miguel Barros.
It aims to showcase a “unique perspective that merges land and sky and offers a reinterpretation of the richness and density of some hidden corners of Macao and memories of the city that are fading away like dreams, through sculpture, photography, video documentation and performance art,” according to the Cultural Affairs Bureau.
In particular, it offers an opportunity to experience “dreamlike yet allegorical scenes of daily life” in Macao.
Established in 2019, the art group – “yii ma” means “the twins” in Cantonese – created the exhibition by visiting historical spots across the city, such as martial arts venues, antique stores and old offices, where the two artists documented their on-site performance art through which they present some of Macao’s “hidden corners” that are rich in history.
The 59th Venice Biennale will run until 27 November. Macao has participated in the biennale’s International Art Exhibition – which has become one of the world’s most prestigious art events since its foundation in 1895 – for the past 15 years.
