Staycationers accounted for 13.5 per cent of Macao’s hotel guests last year, according to the latest statistics.
According to the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC), Macao’s 118 hotels and inns recorded 892,000 local guests in 2021, a year-on-year growth of 41.7 per cent.
Last year’s total number of guests rose by 71 per cent year-on-year to 6.62 million. Mainland guests rose by 94.9 per cent to 5.38 million, accounting for 81.2 per cent of the total. Guests stayed for an average of 1.8 nights.
At the end of last year, the number of available guest rooms stood at 39,000, a year-on-year growth of 10.3 per cent.
The DSEC said that data on hotels and guesthouses designated for quarantine were excluded from the compilation of the results.
Last year’s average occupancy rate rose by 21.4 percentage points year-on-year to 50 per cent.
In December, the sector welcomed 650,000 guests, a year-on-year increase of 12.1 per cent. Mainland guests (531,000) and staycationers (85,000) rose by 7.8 per cent and 39.6 per cent respectively. Staycationers accounted for 13.1 per cent of all hotel guests last month.
In pre-pandemic 2019, Macau’s hotels and inns welcomed 14.1 million guests, a year-on-year growth of 1.1 per cent.
The bureau announced earlier this month that Macao’s visitor arrivals rose by 30.7 per cent year-on-year to 7.7 million in 2021, The Macau Post Daily reported.
