The Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement yesterday that pedestrian traffic flow control measures will be implemented in the city centre – namely Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (San Ma Lou) – and at the Barrier Gate checkpoint during the Golden Week holiday period if too many people are thronging the areas.
The PSP said in the statement that since large numbers of visitors and locals were expected to throng certain areas such as the Barrier Gate checkpoint and the city centre during the National Day holiday, pedestrian traffic flow control measures were being prepared.
The National Day holiday in the mainland starts on Wednesday and will end on Tuesday next week.
According to the statement, if crowd control measures have to be implemented, the locations will include San Ma Lo, Largo do Senado and the Nam Van area.
The statement also said that in case of overcrowding, pedestrian one-way traffic would be implemented in San Ma Lou near Largo do Senado.
The PSP also said in the statement that compared to the same period of last year they expected an increase of five to seven percent in the number of border crossings by visitors and locals. The statement added that during the holiday more officers will be on duty at the city’s checkpoints and tourist spots.
Meanwhile, the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) said in a statement yesterday that according to figures provided by ferry operators, the number of people entering or leaving the city by ferry was expected to decrease compared to the same period of last year. The bureau promised that it will keep a close eye on passenger numbers and require ferry operators to increase their frequency of voyages if necessary.
Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) Director Helena Senna Fernandes said last week she expected the number of visitor arrivals “not to increase much” during the Golden Week period. (macaunews/macaupost)
