Macao’s number of visitor arrivals declined 99.5 per cent year-on-year to 16,133 last month, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Thursday.
The bureau pointed out, however, that the number of visitor arrivals rose 46.1 per cent month-on-month.
Overnight visitors and same-day visitors totalled 9,115 and 7,018 respectively. Visitors’ average length of stay rose by 4.1 days year-on-year to 5.3 days, as overnight visitors stayed longer for an average of 14.7 days (+12.4 days) on account of the 14 days of mandatory quarantine for visitor arrivals. The duration of same-day visitors’ stay remained unchanged at 0.2 day.
The number of mainland visitors fell 99.4 per cent year-on-year to 14,793, accounting for 91.7 per cent of the total, with those from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area (7,136) dropping 99.2 per cent. Last month saw 1,184 visitors from Hong Kong and 152 from Taiwan.
A total of 16,062 visitors arrived by land, 73 per cent via the Barrier Gate. A mere 71 visitors arrived by air. Macao’s ferry links with Hong Kong and the mainland have been suspended for months. Foreign nationals without a local residence permit are barred from entering Macao.
In the first five months of this year, the number of visitor arrivals dropped 81.1 per cent year-on-year to 3.2 million.
