Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong has told reporters that the new director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), Adriano Marques Ho, will be sworn in on June 10.
Lei made the announcement on the sidelines of a plenary session of the Legislative Assembly (AL) on Friday.
Ho, a former chief of the gaming crime investigation unit of the Judiciary Police (PJ), is currently an advisor to Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak.
The policy secretary overseeing the city’s vitally important gaming industry also said that outgoing DICJ Director Paulo Martins Chan had made a request to the previous government last year to return to his original post as an assistant public prosecutor-general. Chan has headed the gaming inspectorate since December 2015 on secondment from the Public Prosecution Office, which has a dozen assistant public prosecutors-general.
Lei said he had asked Chan to stay in his post for about half a year to assist in his bureau’s transition from the previous to the current government. Lei took office as one of the new government’s five policy secretaries on December 20.
Lei also denied media speculation that Chan’s decision to leave the gaming inspectorate had anything to do with the fact that Chan was a public prosecutor in a case of alleged misfeasance in which he was involved as a defendant. Chan was acquitted in the 2014 trial.
A spokesperson for Lei’s office told the Macau Post Daily early last week that the gaming inspectorate will get a new director.
As all other bureaus, the gaming inspectorate is not a policy-making entity but is tasked with implementing policies decided by the chief executive and secretary for economy and finance.
