Macau, China, 12 Oct – The hotel sector’s total revenue rose 29.2 percent year-on-year to 14.24 billion patacas last year, The Macau Post Daily reports today, quoting official statistics released Tuesday.

The gaming industry’s gross revenue amounted to 188.3 billion patacas last year.

The hotel industry’s revenue from room sales amounted to 6.53 billion patacas last year, up 37.3 percent year-on-year. Revenue from food and beverage sales increased 30.2 percent to 3.11 billion patacas. Venue rentals generated total revenue of 2.22 billion patacas, a year-on-year growth of 9.3 percent.

The industry’s total expenditure rose 12.9 percent to 15.65 billion patacas. Expenditure exceeded the sector’s revenue by 1.41 billion patacas, indicating that Macau ’s six gaming operators continued to prop up their hotel operations.

The hotel sector’s operating expenses amounted to 5.48 billion patacas last year, up 23.2 percent. Employees’ wages and benefits rose 10.6 percent to 4.13 billion patacas, while the purchase of goods and payment of commissions jumped 30.3 percent to 1.79 billion patacas.

The sector’s gross value added surged 36.4 percent to 7.08 billion patacas. Gross fixed capital formation soared 88.3 percent to 4.88 billion patacas.

At the end of last year, the sector comprised 60 hotels and 31 guesthouses, with a total of 20,174 guestrooms.

The sector employed 26,721 people at the end of 2010, up 1.5 percent year-on-year. Macau ’s 31 guesthouses employed a staff of just 157 among the sector’s total number of employees.(MacauNews/Tourism)
