Macau, China, 17 Aug -Macau logged 603,004 guests in June, a decrease of 7.3 percent from the previous month, according to figures released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) last week.
In May, the number of hotel guests stood at 650,849.
However, the number of hotel guests in June rose 35.3 percent from the same month last year.
In June, mainlanders and Hongkongers accounted for 50.4 percent and 20.6 percent of all hotel guests.
The hospitality sector’s average occupancy rate rose 15.2 percentage points year-on-year to 75.7 percent in June, but guests’ average length of stay dropped by 0.03 night to 1.5 nights.
In the first half of this year, the number of hotel guests reached 3.8 million, up 22.4 percent year-on-year.
The number of package-tour visitor arrivals in June surged 167 percent year-on-year to 489,023.
Macau’s tourism and hospitality sectors in June last year were severely affected by the swine flu scare.
Mainlanders accounted for 69 percent of all package-tour visitor arrivals in June.
In the first half of this year, the number of package-tour visitor arrivals grew 34.8 percent year-on-year to 3.06 million.
Meanwhile, visitors’ per capita spending – not including gambling expenses – amounted to 1,575 patacas in the second quarter, a decrease of 11.7 percent from the previous quarter when it stood at 1,783 patacas.
Year-on-year, visitors’ per capita spending rose three percent in the second quarter.
Mainlanders’ per capita spending was the highest among all major visitor segments, at 2,397 patacas.
According to The Macau Post Daily, in the second quarter, per capita non-shopping spending – excluding gambling expenses – dropped 20 percent year-on-year to just 813 patacas, of which expenses on accommodation accounted for 46 percent. Per capita shopping spending grew 49 percent to 761 patacas, mostly on local food products (24 percent), garments (18 percent) and jewellery and watches (17 percent).
