Macau, China, 11 Aug – Macau’s estimated population rose by 2,200 from the end of March to 544,600 at the end of June, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) announced Tuesday.

Compared with a year ago, Macau’s population was up by 300 at the end of June.

Macau’s population peaked at 557,300 at the end of September 2008, when the number of imported labour was at its highest.

At the end of June, the number of imported workers stood at 72,142, down by 701 from the end of March.

Based on Macau’s land area of 29.5 square kilometres, its population density reached 18,461 inhabitants per square kilometre – the world’s highest.

According to The Macau Post Daily, in the second quarter, there were 1,122 live births, down 5.7 percent from the previous quarter. The gender ratio of the newborn was 105.9 boys to girls, with 577 male babies. A total 446 deaths were reported in the second quarter.

A total of 2,009 mainlanders were allowed to settle in Macau in the second quarter, an increase of 1,252 from the previous quarter. A total of 324 illegal immigrants from the mainland were deaths were reported in the second quarter.
