Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On and Vice-Minister for Public Security Wang Xiaohong have vowed to further strengthen cooperation between the national and local police this year, considering that 2018 will mark the swearing-in of a new local government and also witness two important celebratory events, according to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) on Wednesday.
The statement said that Chui and Wang met “recently” at the local government’s Santa Sancha mansion on Penha Hill to exchange opinions on safeguarding public security in the nation and Macau.
According to the statement, both also exchanged views on the preparations for the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on October 1 and the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland on December 20, known as “double celebration”.
The statement pointed out that Wan headed a delegation from the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) to the 21st working meeting on cooperation between the police on the mainland and in Macau.
According to the statement, Chui pointed out during the meeting that the ministry has always supported Macau’s development and public security since its return to the motherland nearly two decades ago.
The statement quoted Chui as saying that due to this year’s “double celebration” and change of government in Macau, the ministry’s support for the respective preparations was “indispensable.” Chui also said that his government would closely follow the central government’s guidelines for the National Day celebrations.
According to the statement, Wang said during the meeting that his ministry and the local authorities would closely coordinate their work to ensure that the celebratory activities will be a success.
The meeting was also attended by Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak who was quoted as saying that – according to the instructions of the chief executive – when the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) carries out its duty to safeguard national security what matters is “One Country,” not “Two Systems”.
According to the statement, several other senior national and local public security officials were also present at the meeting such as Unitary Police Service (SPU) Commissioner-General Ma Io Kun, Public Security Police (PSP) Commander Leong Man Cheong, Judiciary Police (PJ) Director Sit Chong Meng, Chui’s chief-of-cabinet O Lam, and the Public Security Ministry’s Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs Office Director Chen Siyuan.
President Xi Jinping will reportedly visit Macau for the swearing-in of the new chief executive and other principal officials on December 20.
