The Macau Chief Executive, Chui Sai On, Wednesday reinforce the need of adhering to the “one country” principle while taking advantage of the benefits offered by the “two systems” model and by the integration of Macau’s development with Mainland China.

Speaking during a reception to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) Chui said the government will continue to make every effort to support the national development strategies, including the “Belt and Road” initiative and the development of the city cluster of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

“The inclusion of Macau into the nation’s development plans would provide a clear direction for the city’s future development and create a more favourable environment to maintain Macau’s stability and prosperity” he said.

Chui also said the government would follow the national development strategies as outlined in the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and continue to implement the “One country, two systems” principle.

In his speech, the chief executive also said that the government was cautiously optimistic about Macau’s economic outlook, highlighting that the city has a stable economy, healthy public finances and a low unemployment rate.

Chui also mention the efforts of the government and the community to cope with the challenges created by Typhoon Hato.

“The government would step up efforts to improve the city’s response mechanism in case of emergencies, optimise short, medium and long-term measures for disaster prevention and mitigation and will upgrade the city’s public infrastructure facilities.

Wednesday morning, more than 350 guests had attended a flag raising ceremony at the Golden Lotus Square in celebration of the 18th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau SAR.
