Themed “Heterotopia”, this year’s month-long arts festival will present 25 programmes of dance, music and theatre exploring various possibilities of space by means of different art manifestations.
The 28th Macau Arts Festival (FAM), organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), will take place from April 28 to May 31. The festival comprises over 100 activities, including outreach programmes as sidelines to the performances.
Heterotopia is a concept in human geography elaborated by French philosopher Michel Foucault (1926 – 1984) to describe places and spaces that function in non-hegemonic conditions, such as when you see yourself in the mirror, according to Wikipedia.
This year’s budget is 23 million patacas, about 4 million down from last year, Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) President Leong Hio Ming said during yesterday’s press conference at MGM Macau.
Leong said the reduced budget was due to promotions via electronic media instead of printed material this year. He insisted that the programme’s quality would not be affected.
The festival will be kicked off by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, a modern dance company from the US, bringing audiences a reinterpretation of Schubert and Ravel’s classics.
The closing show will be Russian author Anton Chekov’s masterpiece The Seagull performed by the Reykjavik City Theatre from Iceland.
Local artists will also be on stage in this year’s festival. Members of the Comuna de Pedra Arts and Cultural Association will present “Songs of Migrants”.
