Macau hotels guests rise 15 percent in January

Macau’s 107 hotels and guesthouses welcomed 1.04 million guests in January, a year-on-year growth of 15.6 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Tuesday.

Macau’s 107 hotels and guesthouses welcomed 1.04 million guests in January, a year-on-year growth of 15.6 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Tuesday.

Chinese New Year fell on January 28 this year.

Guests from the mainland (679,000), South Korea (38,000) and Hong Kong (127,000) recorded double-digit growth, up by 17.1 percent, 35.9 percent and 12.9 percent respectively. The number of Taiwan guests dropped 1.3 percent to 40,000.

Tourists from the three Chinese regions accounted for 81.3 percent of all guests.

Guests’ average length of stay remained unchanged from a year earlier at 1.4 nights.

The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses stood at 81.6 percent, up by 4.4 percentage points.

The number of guestrooms rose 12.9 percent to 36,000, of which 5-star hotels accounted for 60.1 percent. The number of guestrooms in 3-star hotels soared 116.7 percent.
