A new dance-theatre production inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s revolutionary score The Rite of Spring is set to take place in Shenzhen.
The piece will be performed at the Bay Opera of Shenzhen on 27 and 28 March at 8 pm both nights, offering a fresh perspective on the modernist classic.
Rather than restaging the 1913 ballet, which concerns a pagan sacrifice, this original commission by the Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts reinterprets its radical spirit by focusing on the young artists across the world who travelled to Paris in the early 20th century, particularly highlighting those from China.

Through choreography and striking visuals, the work explores the artists’ aspirations and challenges amid the upheaval of tradition and modernity through a cross-cultural lens.
Russian composer Stravinsky’s original premiere in 1913 was perceived as a shocking scandal because of its disruptive nature, and is often credited as a piece that signalled the beginning of modern art.
Tickets range from 180 to 680 yuan and are available on Damai and the Bay Opera’s official site.
