Macao was voted as the destination that mainland Chinese travellers were most satisfied with during the first quarter of 2024, earning a total of 83.49 points against Hong Kong’s 81.77 points, the Chinese Tourism Academy (CTA) said in a WeChat post published yesterday.

According to the academy, this is the first time that Macao has achieved first-place ranking. Last year, the city was in third place overall, with a score of around 84 points, while Hong Kong managed to come fifth place, garnering a total of almost 83 points. CTA noted that these results were well-above the average of approximately 78 points that year.

In its assessment of the results, the state-affiliated research institution said that “the facts prove that tourists can feel each bit of effort that the government and businesses put in.”  The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) stated that it was “pleased” to see mainland visitors giving the city a positive assessment.

Last year, a study by the CTA revealed that out of the roughly 40 million outbound trips that mainland travellers took in 2023, a whopping 40 percent consisted of trips to Macao.

Macao remains heavily reliant on the mainland market whose travellers accounted for 70 percent of the city’s total visitor arrivals during the first four months of this year, according to official data

South Korea, which currently has the largest market share in terms of overseas visitor arrivals, made up only 1.5 percent of the total during the same period.
