Macau, China, 25 Set – Macau logged 2.06 million visitor arrivals in August, an increase of 6.4 percent on the same month of last year, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) announced Thursday.
Compared with the previous month, the number of arrivals was up 17.7 percent.
August’s figure was the highest since March 2008, which stood at 2.13 million, according to The Macau Post Daily.
Mainlanders accounted for 50.9 percent of all visitor arrivals in August, reaching 1.05 million, up 8.9 percent year on year. 499,448 mainlanders visited Macau under the individual visit scheme (IVS), down 15.3 percent compared with August last year.
Hongkongers made up 32.3 percent of all arrivals, totaling 666,799, up 2.9 percent year on year.
A total of 125,931 Taiwanese visited Macau in August, a year-on-year increase of 12.6 percent.
The number of Japanese arrivals rose 27.1 percent to 37,505 in August.
Visitors from East Asia, including mainland China and Japan, accounted for 92.3 percent of Macau’s total number of visitor arrivals in August.
A total of 91,361 Southeast Asians visited Macau in August, down 0.5 percent year on year.
Just 24,452 visitors from Europe (up 4.9 percent) and 23,629 visitors from the Americas (up 3.7 percent) visited Macau in August.
The number of visitors from Australia, New Zealand and the rest of Oceania amounted to a mere 8,773 in August, down 4.3 percent on the same month of last year.
In the first eight months, the number of visitor arrivals stood at 14.19 million, a decrease of 9.6 percent on the same period of last year.
52.5 percent of all visitors between January and August arrived by land via Zhuhai, 40.1 percent arrived by sea from Hong Kong and Guangdong, and just 7.3 percent arrived by air Macau International Airport and Macau Heliport.
