Macao’s number of visitor arrivals in July rose 228.1 per cent month-on-month but fell 97.3 per cent year-on-year to 74,006, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Thursday.
In June this year, Macao recorded 22,556 visitor arrivals. In July last year, the number of visitor arrivals stood at 2.79 million.
A DSEC statement attributed the steep month-on-month rise in July to the “adjustment” of COVID-19 quarantine measures.
Same-day visitors and overnight visitors last month amounted to 50,210 and 23,796 respectively.
Mainlanders accounted for 89.8 per cent of all visitor arrivals last month, which also recorded 6,240 visitors from Hong Kong and 1,271 from Taiwan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign nationals without a residency permit in Macao have been barred from entry since early this year. Based on Macao’s “One China” policy, mainlanders, Taiwanese and Hongkongers are considered Chinese compatriots.
Last month’s number of visitor arrivals by land reached 73,604. A mere 402 visitors arrived by air. Macao’s ferry links with Hong Kong and Shenzhen have been suspended since early this year.
In the first seven months of the year, the number of visitor arrivals fell 86.0 percent year-on-year to 3.34 million.
