More than 34,000 visitors poured into Macao last Friday, the most in a single day since the Covid-19 pandemic started in January 2020.

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) stated that the 34,252 arrivals reflected a recent positive trend.

For instance, between 9 and 15 April the government recorded 191,828 visitors, a daily average of 27,404. Compared with the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday period, the figure represented a 111.7 per cent increase.

Hotel and guesthouses’ average occupancy rate was 61 per cent during the same period, an increase of 12.7 percentage points over CNY.

An MGTO spokesman said that “the steady upward trend in visitor arrivals represents a greater flow of visitor [confidence],” pointing out that the pandemic situation remains stable in the mainland and Macao.

The MGTO has seized the opportunity to roll out a string of online and offline promotions tailored for the mainland market by advertising Macao as a “healthy, safe and quality destination”, according to The Macau Post Daily.
