Tourism officials are predicting that visitor arrivals during Chinese New Year holidays will surge significantly as mainland China further relaxes its Covid-19 restrictions.

According to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), as of Monday, around 280,000 mainland Chinese tourists had visited Macao this month – an average of about 10,000 visitors daily.

The MGTO believes that the figure will improve around the Chinese New Year, which starts on 22 January, particularly with the National Health Commission downgrading the management of Covid-19 and authorities relaxing border restrictions across the country.

The MGTO is currently communicating with mainland China’s tourism authorities regarding the resumption of mainland tour groups, and it will maintain its online and offline promotional strategies targeting the mainland Chinese market.

According to the MGTO, there has been a spike in searches for Macao’s tourism products on mainland China’s various online platforms, which local tourism authorities will continue to utilise in attracting tourists to Macao.

The office also strives to strengthen cooperations with these online platforms as well as travel agencies, promising to roll out more air ticket and hotel promotions.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong tour groups are expected to arrive in Macao starting today, according to MGTO, which will continue to implement promo campaigns for the Hong Kong market, TDM reported.
