Macau recorded 6.03 million mainland Chinese visitor arrivals in the first quarter, up percent year on year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said in a statement Monday.

Mainlanders were the only major visitor segment that showed two-digit growth in the first three months.

Mainlanders accounted for 70.6 percent of all visitor arrivals.

The total number of visitor arrivals rose 8.6 percent year on year to 8.54 million.

In the first quarter, there were 4.33 million overnight visitors (+10.2 percent) and 4.21 million same-day visitors (+7.0 percent). Overnight visitors’ average length of stay stood at 2.2 days, 0.1 day more than a year earlier.

Some 2.65 million visitors arrived by sea from Hong Kong and the mainland, 5.09 million arrived by land via Zhuhai, and 805,200 visitors arrived at the airport and heliport.

Hong Kong visitors dropped 2.8 percent to 1.47 million. Taiwan visitors dipped 0.9 percent to 253,400. South Korean visitors rose 4.6 percent to 240,100. All other visitor segments remained well under 100,000 each in the three-month period.

In March, the number of visitor arrivals rose 9.3 percent to 2.73 million.
