Macau, China, 24 Sep -Macau received 16.75 million visitors during the first eight months of the year an increase of 18 percent compared with the same period of the previous year, according to figures released by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) Friday.

Mainlanders and Hongkongers accounted for 53.2 percent and 29.9 percent of all visitor arrivals between January and August.

In the first eight months, just 6.6 percent of all visitors arrived by air. Some 52.2 percent arrived by land via Zhuhai and 41.2 percent arrived by sea from Hong Kong and Guangdong.

Macau’s number of visitor arrivals hit a new monthly record in August, when it reached 2.35 million, up 14.2 percent on the same month a year ago.

Visitors from Mainland China increased by 20.3 percent year-on-year to 1,263,442 in August, accounted for 53.6 percent of total visitor arrivals. Visitors from Hong Kong and the Republic of Korea grew by 13.7 percent and 40.2 percent respectively.

Visitors from Asia made up 97.4 percent of all visitor arrivals in August.

The number of visitors from India rose 53.2 percent year-on-year to 11,353 last month.

Last month, 22,100 visitors from North, Central and South America arrived in Macau, down 6.5 percent year-on-year.

The number of visitors from Europe fell three percent to 22,070, while the number of visitors from Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere in the Pacific dropped 16.1 percent to just 7,361.

The number of visitor arrivals from Africa rose 13.8 percent to 1,813 in August.
