Macau’s number of hotels rose by three to 102 but the number of hotel guests dropped 2.7 percent year-on-year to 863,000 in May, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Tuesday.
The number of guestrooms rose 7.2 percent to 30,000 at the end of May. Due to the opening of three new hotels, the number of guestrooms in 5-star hotels increased 8.4 percent to 20,000, accounting for two thirds of the total supply.
Mainlanders and Hongkongers accounted for 63 percent and 13 percent of all hotel guests in May. While the number of mainland guests dropped 4.2 percent, the number of those from Hong Kong rose 6 percent.
Guests’ average length of stay remained unchanged at 1.4 nights.
The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses dropped 6.6 percentage points year-on-year to 78.9 percent.
In the first five months, the hospitality industry recorded 4.04 million guests, down 8.8 percent year-on-year.
Hotel guests accounted for 32 percent of visitor arrivals in the January-May period. (macaunews/macaupost)
