Macau’s 99 hotels and guesthouses recorded 4.4 million guests in the first five months of this year, an increase of only two percent from a year earlier, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said yesterday.

In May, the number of guests dropped 2.5 percent year-on-year to 886,000. The number of guests from Hong Kong fell by 29 percent.

Mainlanders and Hongkongers accounted for 65 percent and 12 percent of all guests in May respectively. Guests from the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan made up 80 percent of the total number of guests.

At the end of May, the hospitality industry provided 27,900 guest-rooms, down 0.6 percent. Five-star hotels accounted for two-thirds of the total supply, with 18,000 rooms.

Guests staying in 5-star hotels accounted for 58 percent of the total in May.

The average length of stay of guests was just 1.4 nights.

The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses rose by seven percentage points year-on-year to 86 percent, with 4-star hotels leading at 88 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of package-tour visitors rose 16 percent year-on-year to 4.4 million in the January-May period. (macaunews/macaupost)
