Hotel guests rise 4.7 pct in May

Macau’s 115 hotels and guesthouses recorded 1.17 million guests in May, a year-on-year growth of 4.7 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

Macau’s 115 hotels and guesthouses recorded 1.17 million guests in May, a year-on-year growth of 4.7 percent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) has announced.

The number of mainland Chinese guests rose 11 percent to 798,000. Hong Kong and Taiwan guests dropped 11.1 percent and 10.5 percent to 123,000 and 40,000 respectively.

South Koreans continued to be the local hospitality industry’s biggest foreign guest segment. However, their numbers dropped 8.3 percent to 40,000.

Guests’ average length of stay rose by 0.1 night to 1.5 nights. The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses stood at 87 percent in May, up by 1.8 percentage points year on year. Four-star hotels recorded the highest occupancy rate, at 90.4 percent, up by 1.4 percentage points.

At the end of May, the number of guest rooms stood at 39,000, up 6.4 percent. Five-star hotels accounted for 61.4 percent of all guestrooms.

In the first five months of the year, guests of hotels and guesthouses rose 8.2 percent to 5.71 million.
