First-half hotel occupancy drops by almost a quarter over 2021

Macao’s 121 hotels recorded 2.62 million guests in the first half of this year, a year-on-year decline of 22.3 per cent.

The Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said that guestrooms’ average occupancy rate fell 12.8 percentage points year-on-year to 37.6 per cent in the first six months. 

Guests’ average length of stay remained stable at 1.8 nights. 

In June, the hotel sector recorded 421,000 guests, a year-on-year decrease of 10.3 per cent, including 315,000 mainland Chinese and 78,000 staycationers. The number of hotels was up by six from June last year. 

At the end of June, the number of available guestrooms stood at 37,000, a year-on-year growth of 5.5 per cent.

The bureau noted that statistics on hotels designated by the government for medical observation and self-health monitoring quarantine were excluded from the compilation of the data. 

In June, five-star hotels recorded an average occupancy rate of 31.9 per cent, a decrease of 12.2 percentage points year-on-year.
