As Covid-19 pandemic travel restrictions bite, guests from mainland China fall by almost 60% to 244,000, but locals ‘holidaying at home’ fill 95,000 beds.

Macao’s 121 hotels and inns recorded 369,000 guests last month, a year-on-year decline of 46.9 per cent, the Statistics and Census Bureau has announced. 

While the number of mainland China guests dropped by 59.5 per cent to 244,000, the number of local staycationers rose by 55.8 per cent to 95,000. Guests’ average length of stay increased by 0.1 night to 1.7 nights. 

Guestrooms’ average occupancy rate fell by 29.5 percentage points to 29.5 per cent. 

Data on hotels designated for Covid-19 quarantine were excluded from the compilation of the data, the bureau noted. 

In the first four months, the number of guests declined by 18.8 per cent to 1.74 million.
