Macau’s 2,309 eateries generated 11.2 billion patacas in receipts last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced.

Based on Macau’s total land area of 30.8 square kilometres, there were nearly 75 eateries per square kilometre last year.

The bureau’s definition of eateries comprises restaurants, “eating and drinking places” and cooked-food stalls.

The number of eateries rose by 44 year on year to 2,309 at the end of last year, including 2,237 restaurants and “eating and drinking places”, and 72 cooked-food stalls in municipal wet markets.

The number of persons engaged in the sector increased by 198 to 32,749, some 96.1 percent of whom were employees.

The sector’s receipts grew by 5.5 percent to 11.22 billion patacas, while expenditure rose by 5.0 percent to 11.01 billion patacas.

Gross surplus amounted to 215 million patacas, up by 23.2 percent, while the sector’s gross surplus ratio edged up by 0.3 percentage points to 1.9 percent.

Gross value added (GVA), which measures the sectoral contribution to the overall economy, amounted to 4.06 billion patacas, up by 3.4 percent.

Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) dropped by 8.0 percent to 318 million patacas.

At the end of last year, Macau had 840 cafés and congee and noodle shops with receipts of 2.43 billion patacas, 621 Chinese restaurants with receipts of 4.86 billion patacas and 208 Western restaurants with receipts of 1.29 billion patacas.

Last year’s receipts generated by eateries amounted to less than half a month’s receipts generated by the gaming industry in the first three quarters of this year.
