2.3 million visit Macau in May, up 9.1 pct

Macau recorded 2.34 million visitor arrivals last month, an increase of 9.1 percent from the same month last year, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said Monday.

The daily average of visitor arrivals stood at 75,565 in May. Same-day visitors accounted for 51.7 percent of the total.

Month-to-month, the number of visitor arrivals was down 2.3 percent last month.

Mainlanders and Hong Kong citizens accounted for 63.6 percent and 23.1 percent of all arrivals in May respectively.

While the number of mainland visitors rose 17.3 percent year-on-year, the number of Hongkongers visiting the city dropped 0.1 percent.

Visitors stayed for an average of just one day, unchanged from May last year.

In May, the number of visitors from the US dropped 11.6 percent to 14,146. The number of visitors from the UK rose 14.9 percent to 4,788.

There were 2,965 visitors from Russia last month, up 47.5 percent year-on-year. In the January-May period, the number of Russian visitors reached 14,565.

In the first five months, the number of visitor arrivals rose three percent to 11.8 million. Mainlanders accounted for 62.9 percent of the total. The number of long-haul visitors from the US (72,768), Australia (46,833) and Canada (31,115) all suffered year-on-year declines.(macaunews)
