Work starts today on a major facelift of the area near the Barrier Gate, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has announced.

Over the next four months,  the footbridge on the east side of Praça das Portas do Cerco near the Barrier Gate checkpoint will be renovated and the surrounding pavements enhanced.

The footbridge and the sitting-out area underneath will be temporarily closed during the work.

The renovations will also cover the sitting-out area between the footbridge and Rua dos Hortelãos in Areia Preta, as well as the pavements between Rua da Serenidade, Rua da Paz and Rua dos Hortelãos.

A greenery project and optimisation of the barrier-free facilities will be carried out to improve the environment of the entire area.

The bureau noted that the sitting-out area between the footbridge and Rua dos Hortelãos will be closed to make space for temporary offices and material storage, The Macau Post Daily reported.
