A new 500-metre flyover is set to connect the peninsula and the Zone A land reclamation area by the end of 2024.

The flyover will run from Avenida 1 de Maio near the Macao Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant in Areia Preta district to Zone A, which lies off the north-eastern coast of the peninsula.

The Public Works Bureau (DSOP) unsealed bids submitted by 15 construction companies for the project on Thursday. All bids were accepted.

According to the bureau, the quotations proposed by the 15 bidders range from MOP 186 million to MOP 233.9 million.

The bureau has set a maximum period of 630 working days for the winning bidder to complete the project. The construction periods proposed by the 15 bidders range from 567 to 570 working days.

The flyover will have two lanes – one in each direction. The bureau expects the project to break ground in the fourth quarter.

The project will also include a 300-metre footbridge connecting the peninsula’s north-eastern coast and Zone A. The footbridge, which will be built next to the flyover, will link a current footbridge there that runs from the coastal walking area to the nearby reservoir’s walking area.

Currently, Zone A is connected to the peninsula by one link (Avenida Doutor Ma Man Kei) only, at the busy Oriental Pearl roundabout (Rotunda da Amizade) on the peninsula’s north-eastern coast. Vehicles travelling to and from the man-made island where the Macao and Zhuhai border checkpoints of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge are located – which is east of the 138-hectare Zone A – can only use this link currently.

The project to build a flyover connecting the peninsula and Zone A broke ground in March last year. The single-way flyover will run – by crossing over the busy Oriental Pearl roundabout – from Avenida do Nordeste in Areia Preta district to Zone A as well as to Avenida da Ponte da Amizade – the avenue leading to the Macau-Taipa Friendship Bridge, which means that vehicles entering the flyover from Avenida do Nordeste can choose to travel to either Zone A or Friendship Bridge.

According to the DSOP, the Rotunda da Amizade flyover project, which has a price tag of MOP 179 million, is slated to be completed in November this year.

Zone A is primarily developed for public housing projects, with a number of plots earmarked for private residential projects. Several public housing projects are currently being carried out there, The Macau Post Daily reported.
