Macao is likely to have 4,200 surveillance cameras –  known as ‘Eyes in the Sky’ – across the city by 2028.

The government started installing the cameras in 2016, and plans to add another 300 by the end of 2023.

Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak told the Legislative Assembly that the cameras had proved invaluable in helping the police track down criminals, citing two homicide cases involving black market currency deals which were solved swiftly thanks to the system.

Macao police are already using the Eyes in the Sky for facial and licence plate recognition, and Wong said Customs officers were planning to take advantage of the system to deter smugglers at the border.
